INTRODUCTION

Dibutyl sulfide is an organosulfur. It is a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid characterized by a strong sulfur-like odor and is primarily used as an intermediate in chemical synthesis, specialty organic manufacturing, and research applications. The compound exhibits good solvency properties and moderate thermal stability, making it useful in industrial and laboratory processes involving sulfur-containing organic compounds.

MANUFACTURE

Dibutyl sulfide is commonly manufactured through the reaction of butyl halides, such as butyl chloride or butyl bromide, with sodium sulfide or related sulfide salts under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. The process typically involves nucleophilic substitution reactions carried out in suitable organic solvents, followed by purification through distillation to achieve the desired purity.

Synonymsdi-n-butyl sulfide, dibutyl thioether, butyl sulfide, thio-bis-butane, and sulfur dibutyl.
