INTRODUCTION

Tetrabutylammonium fluoride trihydrate (TBAF trihydrate) is a hygroscopic solid and is a versatile reagent in many chemical reactions. It us usually consumed in aldol-type condensation, Michael-type, and ring opening reactions.

Manufacture
TBAF trihydrate is produced by reaction of aqueous hydrogen fluoride with aqueous solution of tetrabutylammonium bromide over an Amberlite resin.

Structure

Applications

The quaternary ammonium salt has many applications such as:
phase transfer catalyst
mild base in organic reactions
source of fluoride anion in organic solvents
reactant in synthesis of cellulose derivatives, lipophilic peptides, and in dehydrobromination reactions
deprotecting agent to remove silyl ether protecting group
It also plays an important in conversion of O-silylated enolates into carbonyl compounds in presence of DMSO.
