INTRODUCTION
2-Methylimidazole is a monomethylated imidazole that can be used as a building block in synthesis of a wide range of biologically active compounds. Synthesized through Radziszewski reaction involving acetaldehyde, glyoxal, and ammonia, it is a sterically hindered imidazole that is used to simulate the coordination of histidine to heme complexes. It is is highly soluble in polar organic solvents and water.
It can be deprotonated to make imidazolate-based coordination polymers . it is a precursor to a range of drugs and is a ligand in coordination chemistry.

2-Methylimidazole is used as a raw material for preparation of nitroimidazole antibiotics, which are useful in combating anaerobic bacterial and parasitic infections. |
It is used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient intermediate such as metronidazole and fodder growth promoter dimetridazole. |
As an intermediate for producing pranti-trichomonal pesticides. |
It is employed as a hardener or accelerator for epoxy resin and auxiliary agent for textile dyes. |
