INTRODUCTION

Triphenyl phosphite (TPP) is an organophos-phorous compound and is a colorless, viscous liquid with high boiling point. It possesses a characteristic, delicate fragrance. Its uses can be found largely in polymers. Besides, it participates as a reactant in organic syntheses.

Manufacture

The triphenyl ester of phosphorous acid is produced by reaction of phenol with phosphorous trichloride, hydrochloric acid being the by-product.

Applications

in Polymers
As an antioxidant and a stabilizer in PVC, PP, PS, epoxy, and ABS resins. TPP imparts excellent color stability and heat stability
Improves color and clarity of alkyd resins
Used in process of emulsion polymerization
in Organic Syntheses
Consumed in some reactions that convert alcohol to acid chloride
As peptide coupling agent
In manufacture of pesticides and optical brighteners
RM for production of trimethyl phosphine
RM for synthesis of other organic phosphites such as diphenyl isodecyl phosphite and diphenyl iso-octyl phosphite
