INTRODUCTION

Iodomethane, also known as methyl iodide, is a colorless, non-flammable liquid with pungent, ethereal odor that darkens on exposure to light. It occurs naturally in oceans as a product of marine algae. The liquid is a versatile methylation reagent and methylates carbon, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorous atoms in organic molecules.

Manufacture
The product is manufactured by Finkelstein reaction between methyl chloride and sodium iodide.
