INTRODUCTION

Chromium hydroxide, a gelatinous, polymeric inorganic powder, is amphoteric in nature. It reacts as an acid as well as a base. On heating, it decomposes to chromic oxide. The molecule is largely used in cosmetics and tanning industries.

Chromium hydroxide is produced by reaction of chromic chloride with aqueous ammonia.

Applications

CosmeticsChromium hydroxide is used as a green pigment. In this usage, toxicity of chromium is not regarded as health hazard.
Tanning IndustryA major part of the tanning industry use trivalent chromium salts for tanning and the main compound is chromic hydroxide.
CatalystThe oxide is particularly used as a catalyst in chemical processes such as:
– Dehydrogenation of alcohols
– Hydrogenation of olefins
Other uses– As mordant in textile industries, the lakes formed with this product renders extreme light and washing fastness to the fabric.
– A feeble application in proteomic research is also cited.
