INTRODUCTION

Lithium bromide (LiBr) is a white, hygroscopic solid. The hygroscopic nature makes it a versatile chemical that can be put to various end uses. It is usually sold in anhydrous form or in aqueous solutions of varying concentrations.

Manufacture

The salt is produced by reaction between lithium carbonate and hydrobromic acid. Alternatively, it is also produced by bromination of lithium hydroxide.

APPLICATIONS

Medicinal Uses

LiBr acts as sedative and is used in treatment of bipolar disorders.  It is also a medical humectant.

Air Conditioning

The bromide finds its major application in some air conditioning systems, whereby its 55-60% aqueous solution is used as desiccant (phenomenon of absorption chilling).

Chemical Processes

The salt is further applied in various processes such as:

Absorption of water vapors (vapor absorption media)
Catalyst in dehydrogenation reactions
Low temperature heat exchange processes
Carbonyl compound condensations with active methylene compounds
Some alkylation reactions
Inexpensive catalyst in epoxide ring opening using amines
Deprotonation and dehydration of organic molecules possessing acidic protons
Purification of steroids

Others

Reconstitution of brines, electrolyte component in Li batteries, and welding flux are some of the  feeble uses of LiBr.
