INTRODUCTION

2,6-Lutidine is a liquid product and a semi-volatile compound naturally abundant in tobacco.  Its main applications is as reagent in pharmaceuticals and as a solvent in chemical processes.

Manufacture
It is produced by fractionation of crude pyridine base, which is in turn is obtained from coal tar.  The co-products are alpha-picoline, gamma-picoline, and 3,4-lutidine.  Another industrial process uses formaldehyde, acetone, and ammonia.
