Sodium Xylene Sulfonate is a hydrotrope used to solubilise hydrophobic compounds and in aqueous solutions as well in the study of liposome systems. Sodium Xylene Sulfonate solution may be used in chemical synthesis studies.

Manufacture

Sulfonation of Xylene with Oleum followed by neutralization with Sodium Hydroxide.

Used as Hydrotropic, solubilizer, coupling agent, processing aid, solvent in heavy-duty detergents, shampoos, conditioners, degreasing compounds, printing pastes.
Used as thickening agent in shampoos.
Used as surfactant in cosmetics, shampoos and personal care products.
Used as stabilizer, dispersant, viscous reducer, anti-blocking agent, anti-caking agent in powder products.
Surface cleaners, dishwashing detergents, liquid soaps, hand wash.

Used to extract pentosans and lignin in paper industry.
