INTRODUCTION
Sodium Decane-1-Sulfonate is a surfactant with a long hydrophobic tail and hydrophilic sulfonate group, used to reduce surface tension and stabilize emulsions. It is commonly used in detergents, personal care products, and chemical formulations to enhance solubility and improve performance.
MANUFACTURE
It is synthesized by sulfonating decane with chlorosulfonic acid, followed by converting the resulting 1-decylsulfonic acid into its sodium salt using sodium hydroxide.

APPLICATIONS
It is used as a surfactant in detergents and cleaners to reduce surface tension, emulsify oils and dirt, and enhance the removal of grease and contaminants by making them easier to wash away with water. |
It serves as a mild emulsifier and surfactant in cosmetics and personal care products, helping to stabilize water-oil mixtures and improve foaming and cleaning properties. This makes it well-suited for sensitive skin formulations, including creams, lotions, shampoos, and body washes. |
Amphiphilic nature allows it to solubilize hydrophobic substances in aqueous solutions, making it valuable in pharmaceuticals for enhancing the bioavailability and administration of poorly water-soluble drugs. |
Acts as a model surfactant in laboratory studies on micelle formation, emulsion stability, and surfactant behavior, with its consistent properties making it valuable in surface chemistry, colloidal science, and materials research. |
