INTRODUCTION

2-Ethyl-4-methylimidazole is  a yellowish liquid with an amine-like odor. It is a versatile intermediate with a variety of applications.

2-Ethyl-4-methylimidazole is one of the most common and widely used curing agent in variety of epoxy resins due to high curing efficiency, intermediate curing temperature of epoxy/imidazole resin system and excellent mechanical property of curing product.

Manufacture

The product is formed by condensation of amidine with hydroxy acetone, the former in turn a product of reaction between ammonia and propionitrile.

It is used as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes, textile auxiliaries, pigments and other organic chemicals
Cross-linker for epoxy resins to synthesize network polymers with improved thermal resistance and physical properties
Curing agent for polysiloxane episulfide resin (PSER)
As a catalyst to promote curing of blends of hyperbranched aromatic epoxy polymer and bisphenol F diglycidyl ether
In synthesis of  value – added product 1–(2-cyanoethyl)-2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole
