INTRODUCTION

Polyethylene glycols (PEG), also known as macrogols, are liquid or solid polymers of the general formula H(OCH2CH2)n OH, where n is greater or equal to four.

MANUFACTURE

PEG’s are produced by the interaction of ethylene oxide with water, ethylene glycol or ethylene glycol oligomers. The reaction is catalyzed by acidic or basic catalysts

SynonymPoly(oxyethylene),
Poly(ethylene oxide) ; Poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), α-hydro-ω-hydroxy-
CAS no.25322-68-3
EINECS no.500-038-2
Molecular formulaH(OCH2CH2)nOH
Molecular weight200 to several million
Structure

APPLICATIONS

The outstanding features of the PEGs include their wide compatibility across a range of solvents, wide viscosity range, and hygroscopicity. They are odorless, colorless and show excellent lubricity with low or no toxicity and low volatility.

PEG’s find an increasing use in the Pharma and Personal Care industries:

Capsule and tablet binder
Ointment bases
Liquid preparations
Cosmetic and Personal care
Antiseptic dental cream
Deodorant sticks and roll-ons
Hair dressing preparation
Shaving creams

1,4,7-Trimethyl-1,4,7-triazonane (Me₃TACN) is a valuable macrocyclic tridentate ligand derived from 1,4,7-triazacyclononane. In Me₃TACN, each nitrogen atom is substituted with a methyl group, which significantly modifies its steric and electronic properties. Me₃TACN is widely used as a ligand in coordination chemistry due to its ability to form stable complexes with transition metals such as Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Zn.
