INTRODUCTION

Glycidol is a viscous organic compound that belongs to the class of beta-oxyalcohols. Its reactivity is attributed to the epoxy moiety at beta position.  The alcohol finds applications majorly in APIs, glycidyl esters and ethers, and in alkanolamines.

Manufacture

It is manufactured from 2-Chloro-1,3-propanediol in a catalyzed ring closure process.  The unreacted reactant is removed by distillation
